The Ascension:
Soon after the terrible disappointment at Tai’ef, the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) experienced the events of "Al-Israa" and "Al-Miraaj".
In the "Al-Israa", the angel Gabriel took the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) from the sacred mosque "Al-Haram" in Mecca to the "Al-Aqsa" mosque in Jerusalem in a very short time in the latter part of a night. Here, Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) met with previous Prophets (Abraham, Moses, Jesus and others) and he led them in prayer.
After this, in "Al-Miraj", the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) was taken up to heavens from "Al-Aqsa" mosque to show the signs of God. He (Peace Be Upon Him) also observed the different parts of Heaven and the Hell over there. He was then taken back to "Al-Haram" mosque. The whole experience lasted for few moments of that night.
The Quran attest this event as: "The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold, verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord." (53:17-18)
The two Chapters of Holy Quran "Isra" and "An-Najm" revealed in connection with this heavenly journey indicate that Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was charged with the office of Prophethood for both the Houses of God, in Jerusalem and Mecca.
It was on this journey that God prescribed five obligatory prayers a
day for the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) and his followers
(Muslims).
