Islam And Manners

Eating Manners:

1) Wash hands and face before meal:- The prophet of God (Peace be upon him) said: ' Washing hands and face before and after a meal is the cause of prosperity and blessings.' (Narrated by: Salman Farsi)

2) Begin with the name of Allah:- A meal was brought to Allah's Apostle (Peace be upon him) while his step-son, 'Umar bin Abi Salama was with him. Allah's Apostle (Peace be upon him) said to him: 'Mention the Name of Allah and eat of the dish what is nearer to you.'

3) Eat with the right hand:-The Prophet (Peace be upon him) used to love to start doing things from the right side whenever possible, eating his food, in performing ablution, putting on his shoes, and combing his hair. (Al-Ash'ath said: The Prophet used to do so in all his affairs.)

4) Eat what is nearer:- Umar bin Alsalma says, Once I ate a meal with Allah's Apostle and I was eating from all sides of the dish. So Allah's Apostle (Peace be upon him) said to me: 'Eat of the dish what is nearer to you.'

5) Criticizing a food:-The Prophet (Peace be upon him) never criticized any food (he was invited to) but he used to eat if he liked the food, and leave it if he disliked it.

6) Eating while leaning:- Allah's Apostle (Peace be upon him) said: 'I do not take my meals while leaning (against something).'

7) Not to hurry to finish one's supper:- The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'If prayer is proclaimed and supper is served, take your supper first.'

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'If anyone of you is having his meals, he should not hurry up till he is satisfied even if the prayer has been started.'

8) Satisfaction with a little food:- Allah's Apostle (Peace be upon him) said: 'A believer eats in one intestine (i.e. he is satisfied with a little food) while a unbeliever eats in seven intestines (eats too much).'

A man used to eat much, but when he embraced Islam, he started eating less. That was mentioned to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) who then said: 'A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food) and an unbeliever eats in seven intestines (eats too much).'

9) The food of one person is sufficient for two:- The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'The food for two persons is sufficient for three, and the food of three persons is sufficient for four persons.'

10) Eating with one's servant:-The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'When your servant brings your food to you, if you do not ask him to join you, then at least ask him to take one or two handfuls, for he has suffered from its heat (while cooking it) and has taken pains to cook it nicely.'

11) Invitation of feast:- Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: 'When any one of you is invited to a feast, he should accept it. He may eat if he likes, or he may abandon (eating) if he likes.'
