Islam & Ethics

Ethics lies at the heart of Islamic teachings and all men and women are expected to act ethically towards each other at all times.

Importance Of Truth:

Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: 'He who abandons lying, having been false, will have a castle built for him just within Paradise. He who abandons disputing, having been speaking the truth, will have one built for him in the middle of Paradise. He whose character is good will have one built for him in the highest part of it.'

Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: 'If you have four characteristics, whatever worldly advantage passes you by does not matter to you: keeping a trust, speaking the truth, a good character, and abstemiousness in food.'

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: ' Do not swear by your fathers, or by your mothers, or by rivals to Allah; and swear by Allah only, and swear by Allah only when you are speaking the truth.'

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'The best fighting (jihad) in the path of Allah is (to speak) a word of justice to an oppressive ruler.'

Trust:

The Quran says:

"Allah doth command you to render back your trusts to those to whom they are due; and when ye judge between man and man that ye judge with justice: verily how excellent is the teaching which He giveth you! for Allah is He who heareth and seeth all things." (4.58 )

"Give full measure when ye measure and weigh with a balance that is straight: that is the most fitting and the most advantageous in the final determination." (17.35 )

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'The signs of a hypocrite are three:

1. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.

2. Whenever he promises, he always breaks it (his promise ).

3. If you trust him, he proves to be dishonest. (If you keep something as a trust with him, he will not return it.)' (Narrated by Abdu Hurayrah)

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) Said: 'If anyone is pleased to love Allah and His Messenger, (peace be upon him) or rather to have Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) love him, he should speak the truth when he tells anything, fulfill his trust when he is put in a position of trust, and be a good neighbor.' (Narrated by Abdu Rahman)

Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: 'If you have four characteristics, whatever worldly advantage passes you by does not matter to you: keeping a trust, speaking the truth, a good character, and abstemiousness in food.' (Narrated by Abdullah)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'If you guarantee me six things on your part I shall guarantee you Paradise. Speak the truth when you talk, keep a promise when you make it, when you are trusted with something fulfill your trust, avoid sexual immorality, lower your eyes, and restrain your hands from injustice.' (Narrated by Ubadah)

Honesty:

The Quran says:

"The Evil One threatens you with poverty and bids you to conduct unseemly. Allah promiseth you His forgiveness and bounties and Allah careth for all and He knoweth all things." (2.268 )

"Give full measure when ye measure and weigh with a balance that is straight: that is the most fitting and the most advantageous in the final determination." (17.35)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'A man who earns honestly, is God's friend.'

Promise:

The Quran says: "And keep the covenant. Lo! of the covenant it will be asked." (17.34)

The Quran says: "And fulfill your (part of the) covenant, I shall fulfill My (part of the) covenant." (2.40)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'The signs of a hypocrite are four: Whenever he speaks he tells a lie; Whenever he is entrusted he proves dishonest; Whenever he promises he breaks his promise; Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent evil insulting manner (unjust).'

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'When a man makes a promise to his brother with the intention of fulfilling it and does not do so, and does not come at the appointed time, he is guilty of no sin.'
