Islam & Ethics

Patience:

The Quran says: "Most surely man is in loss, except those who believe and do good, and enjoin on each other truth, and enjoin on each other patience."

The Quran says: "Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil) but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Who say when afflicted with calamity: To Allah we belong and to Him is our return. They are those on whom (descend blessings from Allah and Mercy and they are the ones that receive guidance." (2.155-57)

The Messenger of God (Peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever tries to be patient, Allah will give him patience, and no one is given a better or vaster gift than patience.'

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'The real patience is at the first stroke of a calamity.'

Allah's Apostle (Peace be upon him) said: 'If God wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.'

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'Allah said, "If I deprive my slave of his two beloved things (i.e., his eyes) and he remains patient, I will let him enter Paradise in compensation for them."'

Gentleness:

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'Show gentleness, for if gentleness is found in anything, it beautifies it and when it is taken out from anything it damages it.'

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'He who is deprived of gentleness is deprived of good.'

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'If anyone possesses these three characteristics Allah will give him an easy death and bring him into His Paradise: gentleness towards the weak, affection towards parents, and kindness to slaves (for those days when slavery was not banned).'

Kindness:

The Holy Quran says:

"And even if thou hast to turn away from them in pursuit of the Mercy from thy Lord which thou dost expect yet speak to them a word of easy kindness." (17.28)

"Serve Allah and join not any partners with Him: and do good to parents kinsfolk orphans those in need neighbors who are near neighbors who are strangers the companion by your side the way-farer (ye meet) and what your right hands possess: for Allah loveth not the arrogant the vainglorious;" (4.36)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'If anyone possesses these three characteristics Allah will give him an easy death and bring him into His Paradise: gentleness towards the weak, affection towards parents, and kindness to slaves (for those days when slavery was not ban).'

Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: 'One who treats badly those under his authority will not enter Paradise.'

Privacy:

Islam ensures the privacy of every one. God has prohibited to enter into one's privacy without his permission.

The Quran says: "If ye find no one in the house enter not until permission is given to you: if ye are asked to go back go back: that makes for greater purity for yourselves: and Allah knows well all that ye do".

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'If anyone of you asks the permission to enter thrice, and the permission is not given, then he should return.'

Whenever the Prophet (Peace be upon him) asked permission to enter, he knocked the door thrice with greeting and whenever he (Peace be upon him) spoke a sentence (said a thing) he used to repeat it thrice.

Purity:

The Quran says:

"Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty;"

At another occasion Quran says:

"Women impure are for men impure and men impure are for women impure; and women of purity are for men of purity and men of purity are for women of purity: these are not affected by what people say: for them there is forgiveness and a provision honorable."

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever guarantees me (the chastity of) what is between his legs (i.e. his private parts), and what is between his jaws (i.e., his tongue), I guarantee him Paradise.'
