Peoples Rights in Islam

Parent's rights in Islam:

In the Islamic world there are no old people's homes. The strain of caring for one's parents in this most difficult time of their lives is considered an honor and blessing, and an opportunity for great spiritual growth. God asks that we not only pray for our parents, but act with limitless compassion, remembering that when we were helpless children they preferred us to themselves. When they reach old age, Muslim parents are treated mercifully, with the same kindness and selflessness. Mothers are particularly honored, the Prophet (Peace be upon him) taught that 'Paradise lies at the feet of mothers'.

In Islam, serving one's parents is a duty second only to prayer, and it is their right to expect it. It is considered despicable to express any irritation when, through no fault of their own, the old become difficult.

Kindness to Parents:

The Holy Quran says: "We have enjoined on man Kindness to his parents: in pain did his mother bear him and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of the (child) to his weaning is (a period of) thirty months. At length when he reaches the age of full strength and attains forty years he says 'O my Lord! grant me that I may be grateful for Thy favor which Thou hast bestowed upon me and upon both my parents and that I may work righteousness such as Thou mayest approve; and be gracious to me in my issue. Truly have I turned to Thee and truly do I bow (to Thee) in Islam." (46.15)

The Holy Quran says: “Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and be kind to parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, do not say 'uff' to them or chide them, but speak to them in terms of honor and kindness. Treat them with humility, and say, 'My Lord! Have mercy on them, for they did care for me when I was little.” (17.23-4)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'If anyone possesses these three characteristics Allah will give him an easy death and bring him into His Paradise: gentleness towards the weak, affection towards parents, and kindness to slaves (for those days when slavery was not ban).'

Showing Gratitude:

The Holy Quran says: "And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command) "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal."(31.14)

A man said, "Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) what rights can parents demand from their children?" He (Peace be upon him) replied, 'They are your Paradise and your Hell.'

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is reported to have said: 'Don't be disobedient to your parents even if they command you to abandon your family and your property.'

Serving Parents:

A man said to the Prophet (Peace be upon him), "Shall I participate in war (Jihad)?" The Prophet asked, 'Are your parents alive?' The man said, "Yes." the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'Do Jihad for their benefit.' (means attending and serving one's parents is equal in honor as to one who fights against an enemy for the benefits/interests of his nation)

Praying for Parents:

The Holy Quran says: "And out of kindness lower to them the wing of humility and say: "My Lord! bestow on them Thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood." (17.24)

A man of came to prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and said: Apostle of Allah is there any kindness left that I can do to my parents after their death? He (Peace be upon him) replied: 'Yes, you can invoke blessings on them, forgiveness for them, carry out their final instructions after their death, join ties of relationship.'

About Rude behavior:

The Holy Quran says: "But (there is one) who says to his parents "Fie on you! Do ye hold out the promise to me that I shall be raised up even though generations have passed before me (without rising again)? " And they two seek Allah's aid (and rebuke the son): "Woe to thee! have Faith! For the promise Allah is true." But he says "This is nothing but tales of the ancients!" (46.17)

Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: 'He who casts up the favors he has done, he who is disobedient to parents, and he who is addicted to wine will not enter Paradise.'

The messenger of God (Peace be upon him) said: 'It is one of the greatest sins that a man should curse his parents.' It was asked (by the people), "How does a man curse his parents?" The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'The man abuses the father of another man and the latter abuses the father of the former and abuses his mother.'
