Islam And Tolerance

Tolerance And Broad Mindedness:

In Islam it is forbidden to be intolerant, to the extent it prevents from maligning the elders, leaders and persons held holy by other peoples and religions.

The Quran says: "Revile not those unto whom they pray beside Allah lest they wrongfully revile Allah through ignorance. Thus unto every nation have We made their deed seem fair. Then unto their Lord is their return, and He will tell them what they used to do."(6.108)

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said: 'To abuse one's parents is a cardinal sin'  the prophet's companion asked 'Does any one abuse his parents!?' He (Peace be upon him)  said 'Yes! if a person abuses the parents of another person, that person reviles his parents in retaliation.'

There is no room for compulsion or force in Islam and similarly no ground for hatred on account of religion.

The Quran says: "There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error"(2.256)

The Quran says: "The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend." (41.34)

The message of Islam is to set up examples of Islamic virtues and excellence by words and deeds. After this every one has a direct concern with God and no body is allowed to interfere. To follow these teachings is left to the choice of the people. God has explained good and evil very clearly in Islam and after explaining it He left it to the discretion of humanity to take whichever direction they wish.

This sets the best example of tolerance and broad mindedness for Muslims and the other communities.
