Economic Structure of Islam

Emphasis on Economic Progress:

Islam has consigned the world, the whole universe as the field of man's deeds and has exhorted him to strive greatly to earn his livelihood. Unlike capitalistic economy approach in which basic importance is given to profit, the Islamic Economic System stress on the increase in production to provide livelihood to God's creatures as of prime importance while personal profits and benefits should be of secondary importance.

The propagation of production is a duty termed as "Kifaya". Which means if some one fulfils his duty it does not remain incumbent on the rest and if all neglect such a duty all are answerable. This is why it is the principle of Islamic Economy that economic conveniences should be provided to the whole of humanity.

The Quran says: "And verily we have given you an adobe to stay wherein placed provisions for your livelihood." (7.11)

Islam has encouraged mankind in many ways to earn their livelihood to strive economically and to work hard. It regards unemployment and begging undesirable and striving for bread as compulsory.

The Quran says: "And forget not thy portion of the present world." (28.77)

The Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'After you perform your morning prayers do not go to sleep foregoing your duty to seek your livelihood.'

The Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'By Him in Whose Hand my life is, it is better for anyone of you to take a rope and cut the wood (from the forest) and carry it over his back and sell it (as a means of earning his living) rather than to ask a person for something and that person may give him or not.' (Narrated by: Abu Huraira)
