Practices of Islam

Fasting

Fasting is called "Saum" in Arabic. It  is  compulsory, for a Muslim adult who is mentally normal, to practice saum (fasting) during the entire month of Ramadan. In Islam saum (fasting) means  total abstinence from food, liquids, smoking and copulation from dawn to sunset.

It is a matchless Islamic institution which teaches man the principle of sincere love to God. Fasting (Saum) teaches man a creative sense of hope, devotion, patience, unselfishness, moderation, willpower, wise saving, sound budgeting, mature adaptability, healthy survival, discipline, spirit of social belonging, unity and brotherhood.

Exceptions: Women during their period of menstruation and while nursing their child are exempted from the Fasting. Similarly if some one is in travel or sickness or he/she is not mentally normal is exempted from this compulsory during that time.
