Islamic Marriage

 Muslim Marriage:

A Muslim marriage is not a 'sacrament', but a simple, legal agreement in which either partner is free to include conditions. As a result, divorce is not common, although it is not forbidden as a last resort. According to Islam, no Muslim girl can be forced to marry against her will: her parents will simply suggest young men they think may be suitable. The Muslim marriage customs may vary widely from country to country with the touch of local culture.

 Marriage Protects Chastity:

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) is reported to have said, 'O young people! Whoever among you is able to marry, should marry, and whoever is not able to marry, is recommended to fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power.'  (Narrated by Alqama)

 Cause of love & Blessings:

The Quran says:

"And among His Signs is this that He created for you mates from among yourselves that ye may dwell in tranquility with them and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts); verily in that are Signs for those who reflect." (30.21)

Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: 'You have seen nothing like marriage for increasing the love of two people.' (Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: 'The marriage which produces most blessing is that which involves least burden.' (Narrated by Aisha)

Forbidden to Marry with:

The Quran says:

"Prohibited to you (for marriage) are: your mother daughters sisters father's sisters mother's sisters; brother's daughters sister's daughters foster-mothers (who gave you suck) foster-sisters; your wives' mothers; your step-daughters under your guardianship born of your wives to whom ye have gone in no prohibition if ye have not gone in; (those who have been) wives of your sons proceeding from your loins; and two sisters in wedlock at one and the same time except for what is past; for Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful." (4.23 )

"And marry not women whom your fathers married except what is past: it was shameful and odious an abominable custom indeed." (4.22)

"Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters) until they believe; a slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman even though she allure you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: a man slave who believes is better than un unbeliever even though he allure you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the fire. But Allah beckons by His grace to the Garden (of Bliss) and forgiveness and makes His Signs clear to mankind: that they may celebrate His praise." (2.221)

 Allowed to Marry with:

Except with those relations God has forbidden to marry with, Muslims are allowed to marry with all other relatives including their first cousins.

Marrying with the people of the Book

The Quran says:

"This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers but chaste women among the People of the Book revealed before your time when ye give them their due dowers and desire chastity not lewdness nor secret intrigues. If anyone rejects faith fruitless is his work and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good)." (5.5 )

 Temporary marriage:

The Apostle of Allah (Peace be upon him) prohibited temporary marriage with women. (Narrated by Al Juhani)
