Importance of Education & Research in Islam

Education:

Islam is a religion based upon knowledge for it is ultimately knowledge of the Oneness of God combined with faith and total commitment to Him that saves man. The text of the Quran is replete with verses inviting man to use his intellect, to ponder, to think and to know, for the goal of human life is to discover the Truth which is none other than worshipping God in His Oneness.

The importance of knowledge in Islam can be determine by this fact that the very first verses of Quran revealed to the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) are about knowledge.

The Quran says: "Read! in the name of thy Lord  and Cherisher Who created. Created man out (mere) clot of congealed blood. Read! and thy Lord is Most Bountiful. He Who taught (the use of) the Pen. Taught  man that which he knew not."

The Quran asks: "Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? "

The Hadith (sayings of Prophet) literature is also full of references to the importance of knowledge.

The Messenger of God (Peace be upon him) said: 'Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.'

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said: 'Seeking of knowledge is the duty of every man and woman.'

Research:

The Holy Quran emphasizes the significance of knowledge and encourages to learn and to acquire knowledge not only of God's laws and religious injunctions, but also of the world of nature.

The Quran says:

"Verily in the heavens and the earth, are signs for those who believe. And in the creation of yourselves and the fact that animals are scattered (through the earth), are signs for those of assured faith. And in the alteration of night and day, and the fact that Allah sends down sustenance from the sky, and revives therewith the earth after its death, and in the change of the winds, - are signs for those that are wise. Such are the signs of Allah, which we rehearse to thee in truth: then in what exposition will they believe after Allah and his signs?" (45.3-6)

"Say: The (Quran) was sent down by Him who knows the secrets (that is) in the heavens and the earth." (25.6)

"And those to whom knowledge has come see that the (revelation) sent down to thee from thy Lord - that is the truth, and that it guides to the path of the Exalted (in Might), worthy of all praise." (34.6)

There are many verses in Quran inviting man to research and to learn the facts about the things around him. The subjects discussed in Quran are physics, chemistry, biology, medical science, geography, astronomy, mathematics, architecture, hydrography etc.
